 The process of developing Ukrainian-Russian-English terminological online dictionary “Ship Piping Systems”

A number of characteristics specific for the process of developing Ukrainian-Russian-English terminological online dictionary “Ship Piping Systems” is described. Its main educational function is highlighted.

The article is dedicated to one of the most important aspects of language policy – formation of term standards, namely, for the ship piping term system. The main challenge consists in the fact that the absence of the term standard makes it more difficult to train competent specialists in the field of science and technology which is the main aim of the Department of Ship and Stationary Power Plants. The analysis of term dictionaries has revealed a considerable number of translations of the same term. Moreover, the insufficient number of Ukrainian contexts does not enable to eliminate mistakes and ambiguities and select one relevant translation equivalent even when there are concise definitions available.

The aim of the learner’s online dictionary “Ship Piping Systems” is to obtain an efficient resource for optimizing the teaching process.

The dictionary corpus includes classifying, contextual, ideographic, encyclopedia and translating components, i.e. frames (structure of the particular conceptual fields of knowledge), a glossary, a thesaurus, contexts demonstrating the term usage and terms in Ukrainian, Russian and English.

The electronic dictionary is implemented as the program or the mobile application and can be installed in a variety of electronic gadgets or can be represented as a website.

The online dictionary enables to use its multimedia functions: animation for showing the principles of operation of the components of ship and piping systems: pronunciation of terms, videos for teaching purposes.
